The relationship between design and cutting efficiency of dental burs.

چکیده
R ECENTLY several articles have been presented which have described in some degree the heat generation, the vibration characteristics, and the cutting efficiency of various rotating dental instruments.1-6 These reports have indicated that the operating characteristics of rotating instruments are interrelated to some degree and are modified by the speed of operation and the force applied to the instrument. The previous reports have given little attention to the matter of instrument design as it is related to the cutting efficiency and functional life of the dental bur. The cutting efficiency of a rotating dental instrument may be considered the ability of that instrument to remove a maximum amount of tooth tissue with a minimum of effort and time involved in the operation. Closely related to the cutting efficiency characteristic of the instrument is its functional life, which may be considered the time interval through which the instrument may be used effectively to cut tooth tissue. Both the efficiency and the functional life of the rotating instrument are no doubt interrelated, and both characteristics are of significance to the practitioner in his effort to shape the cavity with a minimum of time and effort. It was the purpose of this study to determine some of the factors of design which influence the relative cutting efficiency and the functional life of the steel and carbide dental bur. Because of the manner in which the study was conducted, it has been to some degree a survey of the products available to the profession. This was not, however, the primary purpose of the investigation. It has been observed empirically by many clinical operators that there is a variation in the behavior of different products with respect to both the cutting efficiency characteristics and the relative life of the cutting instrument. It was the basic purpose of this study, therefore, to determine if there were some fundamental reasons of design which might account for this observed difference in operating behavior. Some of these differences are described in this report.

Evaluation of Different Sterilization Methods on the Uniformity of Diamond Dental Burs and the Change in the Cutting Edge of Carbide Burs by Electron Microscopy
Introduction: Dental burs are one of the most commonly used materials in dental offices and have, therefore, the highest risk of cross-contamination. Accordingly, sterilization of dental burs is highly recommended. Using the electron microscopy, this study aimed to evaluate the results of different sterilization methods on the uniformity of diamond dental burs and the change in the cutting edge...
متن کاملComparison of cutting efficiency with different diamond burs and water flow rates in cutting lithium disilicate glass ceramic.
BACKGROUND This study compared different diamond burs and different water flow rates on the cutting efficiency of sectioning through lithium disilicate glass ceramic. METHODS The authors used a standardized cutting regimen with 4 brands of diamond burs to section through lithium disilicate glass ceramic blocks. Twelve diamonds of each brand cut through the blocks in randomized order. In the f...

Traditionally, it has been difficult to compare the clinical performance of carbide dental burs. The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate the comparative cutting efficiency of number 330 dental burs from six manufacturers. These burs were tested utilizing custom-built equipment consisting of a frictionless air sled to which the Macor substrate was attached. The substrate was fed ...

THE advent of cavity-shaping technics, which utilize high rotational speeds and a light hand pressure to remove a large amount of tooth material, has resulted in an acute awareness by dental operators that certain burs are superior to others. This situation has caused an obvious desire by the dentist, the dental researcher and the manufacturer for knowledge which will explain these differences ...
متن کاملA study of the cutting efficiency of dental burs for the straight handpiece.
IN THE preparation of cavities through the use of rotating instruments utilizing burs and stones, the ideal condition of design and operation has been described as the one which will remove the most material with the least patient discomfort due to heat, vibration, and pressure, and which also produces the longest life of the operating instrument. Some have recommended new and ingenious methods...
